Accessibility – Improved Learning for All Students!

Some students may struggle with a course and it isn’t related to the course concepts. They might have challenges with hearing loss, poor eye-sight, or dexterity affecting how they absorb the material.

Cisco Networking Academy is implementing a number of Accessibility enhancements to aid students with these challenges – both design-related and assistive-technology based features that more closely align to the World Wide Web WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Accessibility enhancements are being made to both the platform and to the actual course as well.  Platform enhancements include:

  • High Contrast Ratio - Colors chosen to provide the user a high-contrast experience so it is easter to read.
  • Keyboard Navigation- Keyboard controls provide the navigation and the ability to execute all functions.
  • Multiple Control Methods provide the ability to execute specific functions with various methods.
  • Focus Visible provides the ability to view the location of the cursor on the screen.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility- labels and other attributes are used to maximize the screen reader effectiveness.

Some examples of  course enhancements include:

  • Screen Reader, Magnifier - Course is accessed with screen magnifier and screen reading software as well as keyboard navigation tools for students with special visual needs.
  • Transcripts and Close Captioning - The majority of cours videos include transcripts or closed captioning helpful for students with hearing impairment.

We’ve begun to release a number of courses with the Accessibility enhancements, with more courses to release over the next several months.  Currently, the courses updated with the Accessibility enhancements are:

  • CCNA R&S: Introduction to Networks (ITN)
  • CCNA R&S: Routing and Switching Essentials (RSE)

  • Introduction to Cybersecurity
  • Cybersecurity Essentials
  • CCNA Cybersecurity Operations

We’ll let you know as more courses release with the Accessibility enhancements, but you can also refer to our Accessibility Statement, found as a PDF-link on Program Resources
